The National School Boards Association and the American Institute of Architects awarded a citation for design innovation to SMMA for the planning and design of the new Quincy High School.
The project will be featured in the Exhibition of School Architecture at the NSBA 72nd Annual Conference and Exposition in Boston on April 21-22.
In awarding the citation, the jury stated “the Quincy High School project responds to both the existing historic school and the urban setting.”
“The facades reflect the context of the surrounding geographic area. Design elements are carried from the exterior to the interior, creating a visually unified project. A courtyard was created that welcomes students and visitors alike, and also acts as a peaceful buffer to the urban surroundings.”
The 330,000-square-foot school serves 1,500 students in downtown Quincy, Massachusetts. It was honored by the Council of Educational Facility Planners with a 2011 Project of Distinction Award, and won a Design Concept Award 2010 from CEFPI.
The exhibition of outstanding school architecture is a major feature of NSBA’s Annual Conference and Exposition. More than 10,000 school board members, superintendents, and other NSBA Annual Conference attendees will view and study the exhibition.
