Maine Army National Guard Aviation Readiness Center

Serving Maine’s Army National Guard (MEARNG), the new Aviation Readiness Center consolidates three units into a single, state-of-the-art training location at Bangor International Airport.

Unlike many design-build projects, the building form, function, and location were left to the design-build team. SMMA’s building and site scheme meets MEARNG’s needs by focusing on functionality and efficiency within a compact facility.

Readiness Centers include a combination of public spaces and technical spaces. Public spaces tend to be located toward the front of the building to welcome visitors. For this project, public spaces included administrative and family readiness offices and an assembly hall.

The design team prioritized the functionality of the building’s administrative offices.

Spaces include private offices for command functions and optimized open space for workstations and collaboration.

The design maximizes open space to provide plentiful natural light and create comfortable private offices for unit leadership. A designated breakout area allows for small group gatherings and informal interactions.

MEARNG’s facility required a mix of heated and unheated storage areas for each of the three occupying units.

The team knew that drill weekends would bring the units together for training exercises. The design optimizes space by aligning the three rear doors of the assembly hall with entrances to each of the three heated storage spaces, with unheated storage located just beyond.

An extra-wide hallway runs from the loading dock through the functional spaces.

It begins at an oversized entry from the loading dock, which has direct access to the assembly hall, kitchen, and arms vault. This entry creates access to these functional areas and allows for the efficient movement of large groups and supplies throughout.
