K-12 District Master Planning

K-12 district master plans are living documents that help school districts envision their future. SMMA specializes in creating well-researched plans that can adapt to face future challenges such as changing demographics, evolving learning methods, and new technologies.

No two school districts are exactly alike: Each community faces their own unique budgeting and infrastructure challenges. Our master plans serve as road map for school districts to pursue their long-term strategic goals informed by deep research, data gathering, and conversations with local stakeholders.

SMMA has conducted over 40 master plans in New England and programmed, designed, and implemented nearly $12.8bn in school construction.

While all are different, each of these master plans provide an opportunity to reconsider how schools can impact and inspire children’s education, and create and define community identity.

A successful master plan engages the community through outreach and data analysis.

Community support and participation is vital. We ensure that public opinion informs the planning of school facilities to guarantee a positive impact for decades to come. Our engagement process begins at public meetings: We spark conversation about neighborhood and community issues and tie them to central design considerations for delivering quality education.

Alongside these meetings, we collect quantitative and qualitative data such as facility effectiveness, operations and efficiency, and community surveys. We show the results in a digital data-driven final deliverable—a hands-on road map for our clients.

K-12 district master plans support student-centric and hands-on learning.

Teaching and learning has been transformed in recent decades. Whereas old schools were designed around traditional classroom instructions, new facilities support next-generation learning methods such as project-based learning and  personalized delivery.

SMMA’s educational planners help our clients to consider building layouts and room adjacencies that reflect new ways of learning. This approach lets students build skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Is your current configuration the best for your community?

Grade configuration options can be a daunting topic. We encourage school districts to consider which grade configurations will best support their student’s learning, growth, and development, instead of fitting students into certain schools based on convenience.

SMMA also benefits from three Accredited Learning environment Planners (ALEP): Phil Poinelli, Matt Rice, and Rosemary Park. As educational planning experts, they ensure that the final study supports an educational framework that meets the needs of the school-age population, educators, and the community.
