Boston Public Schools Master Plan

Show More Information

The BuildBPS Master Plan is a 10-year strategic roadmap for Boston Public Schools (BPS). Launched in 2015, the master plan aims to align future investments in Boston’s school facilities and educational programs. Its goal is to meet the school district’s aspiration to “[transform] the lives of all children through exemplary teaching in a world-class system of innovative, welcoming schools”.

A data-driven approach defines this comprehensive master plan.

In partnership with the school district, SMMA conducted a thorough assessment of each school’s educational needs and the existing facilities’ conditions. City-wide demographics, sustainability potential, emergency preparedness, and transportation options were also factored in. The plan also considered potential partnerships with businesses and institutions.

“BuildBPS is going to transform the way we plan, build, and renovate school facilities. It’s going to unlock everything else we need to do to prepare students for next generation success.”

Martin J. Walsh, Former Mayor of Boston

The BPS Master Plan outlines updates to the district's educational vision and instructional methods. It compiles data and studies to inform investment priorities for school buildings. Additionally, the plan establishes a set of guiding principles for future school design and construction over the next decade.

BuildBPS is presented as both a written master plan and a digital dashboard.

The BuildBPS Dashboard gives stakeholders a comprehensive view of the entire district, supported by data from individual schools. Data visualizations and analysis tools allow users to understand the condition of schools, educational environments, and the relationships between schools and the city of Boston. This data-driven approach allows for informed decision-making and continuous plan updates.

The BuildBPS master plan prioritizes investments that foster equity and student success. By leveraging data and bolstering community engagement, the plan aims to create a future where BPS schools provide modern learning environments that align with the District’s educational vision.
