41 Westland Avenue

Designing sustainable urban housing comes with a unique set of challenges and opportunities. The owners of the Symphony Court development project, a pair of adjoining “sister” buildings at Boston’s 41 Westland Avenue and 44 Burbank Street, aimed for LEED certification. The design prioritizes energy efficiency using an optimized thermal envelope performance, ENERGY STAR equipment, and lighting and heating/cooling systems verified by energy modeling.

The building prioritizes indoor thermal comfort and air quality.

The design seeks to provide occupants with a clean, healthy living space, with access to natural ventilation.

Saving time and money for construction and materials procurement, 41 Westland Avenue reuses part of the existing structure. This lowers the embodied energy of the building and decreases demand for virgin materials.

The project pursued a program of measurement and verification related to building energy use. This involved a long-term verification plan to ensure the building would operate as designed for at least one year after initial occupation
