Sustainable School Design

“I enjoy designing schools,” says Jenifer. “I like all aspects of educational design, but especially the creativity involved in conceptualizing each space. I particularly enjoyed designing the Bancroft Elementary School in Andover. We spent countless hours with the staff and community, which is invaluable when designing a successful learning environment.”

“SMMA wanted to incorporate the school’s surroundings by using natural materials throughout the interior," she says. "We brought daylight through a two-story atrium, incorporated oversized borrowed lights in classrooms, and widened classroom entries, all of which disperse daylight throughout the interior. The palette is sophisticated for an elementary school, but has interesting patterns, recycled materials, and playful colors.”
