A Healing Space

St. Vincent Hospital Cancer and Wellness Center
Worcester, Massachusetts

SMMA was selected to provide full architectural and interior design services for St. Vincent Hospital’s new Cancer and Wellness Center, located in City Square, in the heart of downtown Worcester.

By its nature, a project of this typology—where end users’ wellness and health inform the client’s design aspirations—affords us the very real opportunity to improve the lives of those who occupy, visit and need the space.

The three-story, 65,000-square-foot facility—a part of Worcester Medical Center, houses state-of-the-art technology for outpatient cancer care, including radiation therapy, medical oncology, chemotherapy, and cancer imaging. The Center’s Department of Radiation Oncology houses two linear accelerators, a CyberKnife, and a PET/CT scanner.

Along with nearby Worcester Medical Center, the new Cancer and Wellness Center was designed for maximum patient and physician convenience and efficiency, featuring integrated services and first-class patient amenities.

Designing for Comfort

The medical oncology unit, located on the building’s upper floor, includes clinic and treatment spaces overlooking Worcester’s historic, restored Union Station. The Center was designed with patient comfort in mind, incorporating bountifully day-lit suites and a healing garden, a calming venue that promotes rejuvenation and relaxation. The facility also features a boutique; counseling, support, and education areas; a conference center; and retail space.

Ahead of Schedule

The building achieved Silver certification under LEED for Healthcare guidelines. SMMA also provided structural and civil engineering services, as well as landscape architecture. The project was delivered via design-build methodology in conjunction with Gilbane Construction, and was completed on a fast-paced, aggressive design and construction schedule.
