Fit Body, Fit Mind

Concannon Fitness Center, Providence College
Providence, Rhode Island

SMMA has delivered numerous successful projects for Providence College over nearly two decades of design partnership—Schneider Hockey Arena, Suites Hall, Ray Treacy Track on Hendricken Field, and Slavin Center, to name a few. We are fully committed to providing the students of the College with the highest-quality environments to learn, play, and grow. The Concannon Fitness Center is the embodiment of this commitment.

Concannon is an addition to the Peterson Recreation Center & Alumni Gymnasium, which, combined, comprise a multi-focus athletic and recreation complex. The Center is equipped with aerobic and cardiovascular exercise equipment, free weights, common meeting spaces for socializing, and related support spaces spread over two levels.

The Place to Be

It is a major campus destination, not only for varsity and recreational student-athletes, but also for visitors, faculty, staff, and the local community, to which the facility is open by membership.

The building increases visibility of the adjacent Taylor Natatorium’s 25-meter competition pool, and improves public circulation within the complex, facilitating movement to and from spectator seating at the basketball court, locker rooms, and field house.

It also provides viewing areas that overlook the College’s new Lennon Family Field, and is the new home of the Jimmy Walker Strength & Conditioning Center.

Blending the Athletic and Academic

As the campus’s athletics hub, the Concannon Fitness Center ensures that PC’s students have a place to nurture their physical health and well-being on par with the College’s world-class facilities for learning.

It strengthens the institution’s bond between its athletics and intellectual communities, offering a space for healthy competition, positive recreation, and personal growth.
