Overview

Aubert Hall, which houses the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine was originally constructed in 1913 with major renovations in 1967. Typical of many older university buildings, it had also been modified on an as-needed basis over its long period of use.

SMMA’s architect/engineer design team was engaged to perform a comprehensive due diligence examination of the 97,000 sf building and to assist the Chemistry Department in translating its teaching and research goals into a renovated laboratory and office space. This was accompanied by a new infrastructure of mechanical, electrical, and laboratory services.

In addition to a comprehensive upgrading of research and development labs, student teaching laboratories, and academic classrooms; SMMA designed a new fully accessible lobby elevator and student commons to enhance use of the facility by the university community.
