Project Description: SMMA's architects, engineers, and planners have been called back more than 20 years later to update the microsystems testing laboratory that had served as MIT's first unified facilities for the design, fabrication, and evaluation of advanced micro-electronics VLSI devices. In 1984 SMMA converted a data processing facility into laboratories, offices, support facilities, and three Class 10 and Class 100 student laboratories and one floor of Class 10,000 faculty research facilities. Today SMMA is developing designs to replace aging mechanical and process systems, meet new environmental conditions, reduce overall costs, and construct new cleanrooms without disrupting operations which have been ongoing since the '80s conversion.
