Outreach:
SMMA and its employees are committed to enhancing not only the built environment through design, but also our communities and society at large through our personal and professional actions.
We support such holiday campaigns as the Salvation Army’s Angel Giving Tree, the Home for Little Wanderers’ Wish List, and the Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corps. We help each other make a difference by joining or contributing to fund-raising activities like the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Walk and the Cape Cod Getaway’s two-day bike ride to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
And we pool our talents and resources in efforts like those listed below:
Canstruction®
SMMA and its employees contribute annually to the international effort through which the design and construction industries provide food to the needy. Each year SMMA employees design and build a sculpture from cans and packages of food in competition with colleagues from other firms. The winner is recognized in the media, and the food is donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank by Canstruction®, Inc. a non-profit foundation of the Society for Design Administration.
Rodman Ride for Kids
For more than 15 years SMMA has sponsored a cycling team of riders and volunteers for the Rodman Ride for Kids®, a local nonprofit organization that raises millions of dollars each year for Massachusetts children at risk due to violence, crime, neglect, or abuse. Biking for 25, 50, or 100 miles, SMMA’s team members peddle regardless of the New England fall weather, some for the full 100 miles, others just for a leisurely outing with their children.
SMMA Founder’s Scholarship - Massachusetts Building Congress
In 1997 to honor its first generation leaders, SMMA established the SMMA Founder’s Scholarship to help local young people interested in careers in design and construction. Administered by the Massachusetts Building Congress, the annual Scholarship provides financial grants to exceptional college students identified by MBC members.
ACE Mentor Program of America
SMMA’s engineers donate their time and expertise to teach the civil engineering segment of a pilot educational program aimed at high school students. ACE, a national non-profit organization devoted to increasing high school students’ awareness of the architecture, construction, and engineering professions, has launched a program in Massachusetts, and SMMA engineers are developing lectures and work sessions aimed at Boston 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.
Pro Bono Projects
SMMA supports communities and organizations by contributing services pro bono. For example, SMMA recently donated technical engineering assistance to restore a salt water marsh that was compromised by a 19th Century flood and 20th Century urban growth in Quincy, MA. The flood corrupted the three-acre marsh with sand and fresh water, conditions that were exacerbated by decades of construction that eventually cut off the marsh from its ocean water source. SMMA located and designed a series of tide gates to restore saltwater flow to the marsh and reestablish original habitat conditions. The program was sponsored by the Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, a non-profit alliance of businesses committed to protecting the environment in concert with federal and local agencies.
Higher Education
SMMA higher education clients are regular recipients of financial support through their annual campaigns. Contributions reflect the firm’s commitment to developing facilities that advance the institution’s mission.
American Red Cross
SMMA contributes to the American Red Cross in support of targeted relief efforts for such disasters as Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean Tsunami, and 9/11.
Advancing the Professions
Every year SMMA employees contribute leadership talent and expertise to support the societies and institutions that advance their professions. As officers, committee members, speakers, and advocates SMMA staff serve such organizations as the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies, the Massachusetts Building Congress, the International Interior Design Association, the US Green Building Council, the Corporate Real Estate Network, the Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development, the International Facilities Management Association, the Providence Foundation, the Society for Marketing Professional Services, and numerous community planning and design review committees.
