has opened the doors of its new 325,000sf headquaters in Providence, RI. The largest new building recently constructed in the city, the 13-story facility consolidates the company's 1,100 employees in one location. SMMA provided complete architecture, engineering, interior design, and planning services for the building.

The official ceremony to mark the groundbreaking for the new $130.6 million new Wellesley High School took place on Septemeber 29th. Massachusetts School Builiding Authority Director, Katherine Craven along with other town officials were present at the ceremony.

The SMMA-designed Park at One Hampshire at Kendall Square in Cambridge was dedicated and celebrated with a reception on August 19th. The park was created as a result of collaboration between Draper Laboratory and the City of Cambridge. The park occupies a prominent Technology Square location in front of Draper Lab's 10 - story biotech facility, also designed by SMMA, and features a seating area around a sculptural armillary icon representing ancient technology in the midst of modern innovation.

Five Wall Street, a 170,000 sf six-story office building designed by SMMA, has been certified LEED-CS Gold. The project was completed in a design/build relationship with The Gutierrez Company. Amongst the many sustainable design elements were brownfield redevelopment; public transportation access; bicycle parking; water efficiency; commissioning; recycled/regional/low-emitting materials and certified wood; extensive daylighting; and other innovative design features. SMMA also provided design services to One Communications, the first tenant in the building.

Construction is progressing on Springfield College's new Campus Union Complex in Springfield, MA. The new facility, scheduled to open in Fall 2009, will create a center for the college's student services and activities. SMMA is providing planning, architecture, engineering, and interior design services for the project, which also includes renovations of the adjacent administrative services center.

With a structural system designed by SMMA's engineers, The Bank of New York Mellon's newly installed 76 kilowatt photovoltaic system is now on-line and supplying electric power to the company's 385,000 square foot office complex in Everett. SMMA's contribution to the project was recognized during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on Earth Day and attended by dignitaries including Lt. Governor Timothy Murray and the Mayor of Everett. The two 120’ by 25’ sloped steel frames and the 364 panel array are located prominently on the roof of the building, which was previously renovated by SMMA in 1999. The photovoltaic system, designed by Zapotec Energy Inc, is one of the largest of its kind in greater Boston and among the top 25 solar-electric generating projects in Massachusetts.

Construction recently finished at Providence College on the Slavin Center’s new entry addition and renovation. The ceremonial ribbon cutting was held September 24th. The project provides social and meeting space for students. A new glass-enclosed lobby addition is the main entrance to the student center, enclosing a former underutilized sunken exterior courtyard and adding 8,800 square feet on two levels. Design of the lower level provides a student lounge and an adjacent coffee/smoothie area. The upper level contains a quiet student lounge for studying and small social gatherings. Rooftop photovoltaic cells power the transmitter for student radio station WDOM.

On February 22, a ribbon cutting ceremony marked the opening of the new Quincy High School Science, Mathematics and Technology Academy. Members of the school committee, building committee, and school staff joined the celebration and enjoyed a facilities tour. SMMA is providing full planning, architecture, engineering, and interior design for Quincy's new 368,000 sf, 1500-student high school.

The new 15,500sf ICU designed by SMMA for Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Connecticut has been completed. The unit is located on the top floor of the hospital’s east inpatient building in space previously vacated by the maternity department. SMMA completed the programming, planning, and design of clinical programs on the hospital's campus as part of an initiative to upgrade facilities there.

SMMA recently completed the new entrance lobby at 1000 Washington Street in Boston's South End. The renovated Class A lobby lends a elegant Financial District image to the 11-story former Teradyne building, offered by Nordic Properties for office, retail, and science/technology tenants. The project has subsequently received a National Award of Excellence from the Architectural Woodwork Institute in recognition of its fine interior detailing.

East Greenwich RI voters have approved funding for a new middle school and renovated elementary and high schools, designed by SMMA. SMMA completed preliminary studies for the town vote, and is now providing full design services for the new middle school and elementary/high school renovations.
