Video: Construction Begins for Horatio H. Hunnewell Elementary School in Wellesley, MA

Construction for the new Horatio H. Hunnewell Elementary School in Wellesley, MA kicked off on October 13th with a ceremonial groundbreaking.

Several members of SMMA’s project team took part in the ceremony, including Principal-in-charge Alex Pitkin, Senior Landscape Architect Michael Dowhan, and Construction Administration Architect Jay Williams

Set to open in 2024, the 76,500 square feet facility will serve students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. It is the first of two net zero ready elementary schools to open in the Town of Wellesley in the coming years—both designed by SMMA.

Also present at the groundbreaking was SMMA's project partners W.T. Rich and Compass, who helped organize the event along with Wellesley Public Schools and the Town's Facilities Maintenance Department (FMD).

The groundbreaking was the latest chapter in a story that began in 2004, when SMMA and the Town of Wellesley first began analyzing and exploring new ideas for the town’s seven elementary schools.
