Urban Transformation

In 2012, SMMA collaborated with developer DivcoWest to provide an architectural vision in response to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ request for the purchase and redevelopment of a former courthouse in Cambridge.

The property comprises a 22-story high-rise, constructed in the early 1970s, with a gross square footage of approximately 595,000 square feet. The location is situated close to a popular MBTA station, and the property offers a unique opportunity for private investment in East Cambridge.

Humanizing and Engaging

In approaching this opportunity, our team felt that the first priority was to humanize the bunker-like five-story concrete-clad podium. Here, community-driven programs—retail, restaurants, daycare, and a community room—would open to the streets, engaging both neighborhood residents and workers.

Our approach afforded our team the opportunity to collaborate on an innovative design for a highly visible project located in the city that we proudly call home.
